(Which I speculate is the primary reason it's DLC lifecycle was not prolonged.) This is entirely anecdotal, but playing the vanilla game I've basically never ran into an issue, and a lot of the issues appear tied to the DLC and start dates related to them. (I prefer Records because the Romance balance is too dependent on the generals.) Some people disregard Records mode because the generals in it don't have rally or other abilities like the generals in Romance mode, but in my opinion either mode is fine, it just depends on what you want from battles. While there have been complaints about the battles, I think the closest we've gotten to a consensus is that the final patches did good work in terms of gameplay balance, so the only concern left is in regards to the troops all being similar to one another as in Shogun 2. (You can literally purchase territory and then assault or vassalise the capital.) If you want to play 90% of the game without battling, you can. If you want to play as a bandit leader or errant group of soldiers, you can. The campaign is absolutely phenomenal and the potential to roleplay is immense.
